The Olympics Aren't Just In Vancouver
For the past 5 nights, an Olympic style event has been occurring in our house. Annie and I just qualified for the finals in the Team Sleeping event. In an attempt to allow Annie to sleep through the night, we go head-to-head with Macy from 6:00pm until 10:00pm, trying to entertain her enough to keep her from sleeping. The goal is to keep Macy awake until 10:00, when she gets her late night feeding.
Four of the past five nights, we've won our qualifying heats and found ways to keep Macy up. Our reward? No medals, but a full night of sleep. That's right, we've found that if we can keep Macy awake until her late night feeding, there is a very good chance of her sleeping through the night. The first night we tried this doctor approved event, it was fun finding ways to keep Macy active. But, as the nights have passed, we are finding it harder and harder to come up with events that keep Macy's interest.
Some of our better moments have been based around bath time. Macy really seems to like the water and after a good cleaning, she stays pretty alert for another hour or so. We are trying to be careful not to dry her out by bathing her too much, so we take turns watching her, coming up with things to do with her. There is no doubt that if we are to win the gold medal in this crazy event, it will be on Annie's back. I'm just terrible at this sport. The other night, Annie handed me a fairly awake infant and within a few minutes I found myself caught up in a men's ski race and before I knew it, Macy's eyes were closed. I desperately tried to talk to Macy and get her to wake back up before Annie and the judges noticed, but I was not very successfull.
As I type this, Annie is marching the baby around the house, taking her from room to room, hoping to find something that will catch her attention. Wish us luck, our sleeping habits are on the line...
